This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_01BB_01C1C386.1F2E3340 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable =20 Seek Stronger Follow-Through Day By Jonah Keri Originally published November 13, 2001=20 IBD bases its trading rules on 50 years of market research. The basic = tenets don't change: Look for stocks with great fundamental and = technical features in a bull market. Keep your losses small. But as the market changes, so too will an occasional rule adjust. Today's market is far more volatile than it was a few decades ago. As a = result, a follow-through day now requires a minimum 2% gain in at least = one of the major indexes on higher volume than the previous session, not = 1% as before. Markets have always been jumpy, but the Internet boom has made stocks = even more so. Information flows more quickly, resulting in jarring price swings. = Highflying techs like Microsoft and Cisco Systems flashed enormous = growth, pulling investors along for a giddy, dizzying ride. But just as = those techs can shoot up 10% or more in a day, they can also tumble just = as far. More people have more cash tied up in the market than ever. Fund = managers face added pressure to jump in and out of big stock positions = as the market dictates, causing wild price swings. The market corrections of recent years triggered sharp downward spirals. = To snap out of those drops and confirm a new rally, stocks now need more = than a timid 1% advance. Not all follow-throughs guarantee a long-term rally. But no bull market = since at least the 1930s has begun without one. Also, a 2% = follow-through must be supported by a cast of strong stocks hitting new = highs. Techs had already powered the Nasdaq to a steep advance when the index = corrected 33% from July to October 1998. The Nasdaq sold off on Oct. 8, = but closed in the upper half of its intraday range. That was the = market's bottom (point 1 in the accompanying image). ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Tim Fisher=20 To: canslim@lists.xmission.com=20 Sent: Monday, March 04, 2002 1:55 PM Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] NAZ volume extremely high today ...
