John, You're right, there was a lot of discussion. With the exception of a few, it seems the general sentiment is let's keep the status quo--a general discussion of CANSLIM principals, variations, etc. I pretty much dropped the issue, because I sensed formalizing a list of high potential stocks nominated by various members might be forcing a program that's inconsistent with the overall theme of canslim@lists. HOWEVER, I also recall the email introducing me to the list urging all members to feel free to experiment. With that in mind....Shall we experiment with a show of hands? Those that don't want to participate don't have to; it's actually no different than any other issue herein, right? To those new to this concept...in its simplest (KISS) form we're talking about developing an ongoing list of high-potential CANSLIM candidates. Each participant (nominator) would submit up to five candidates (nominees) for inclusion on the list. We could agree on a very basic set of criteria each stock must FIRST meet to make the list. You know, WON basics: ROE >15%, low or no debt, price >$12, RS and ES >70, last quarter profit >+20%, shares outstanding <100,000. After that it's up to the "nominator" to extol the virtues of his or her nominee(s). Once a week we can update the criteria (I'll keep the list to start) and post based on some pre-determined ranking. In keeping with the spirit of this forum, the nominees on the list are certainly open for comment by anyone (participants or not) at anytime. I suggest, however, for the sake of minimizing time issues, ONLY the nominator can remove a stock from the list. For example: I submit a stock and it gets bashed twenty ways from Sunday by list members, but I still believe in it, so it stays. Or...the stock gets lots of positive feedback but gaps down on the hiring of Jeffrey Skilling as CEO...I cry uncle and yank it. To keep it under control, I'd suggest no more than 5 stocks from any one nominator is manageable. If you see something you like better than your original five, YOU decide which to pull to make room for your new contender...you know, same as with a CANSLIM portfolio! I think the biggest issue when I first presented this was and still is some members' reluctance to share their picks or holdings. Which is perfectly OK. But let's keep in mind, these are not PICKS. They're stocks worth watching that we're placing in an open forum for discussion purposes in the interest of learning CANSLIM (by doing). I find the prospect exciting--mutually dissecting (read: arguing!) the style (cup/handle, double bottom, etc.), the action, the criteria, etc. I would hope that those that don't actively nominate candidates continue to add input about various stocks as discussed on the list from time to time, as they have in the past. And PLEASE...it's an experiment. Maybe it will even be fun! Maybe it will die a natural death. You decide. Okay...time to put up or shut up. John's obviously in. Chris is in. I'm in. Who else wants in? Next Sunday, I'll publish the official tally of participants. If it's five or more, I say we give it a try. After all is said and done, the worst possible scenario is we all come away with a better understanding of CANSLIM and how it responds to real life situations.
