Before posting to the list, I tried it both ways and got the same message.
Now I logged in first and it worked. I think they are tweaking it as we talk
about it.
Prior to today, if you had your browser closed and clicked the spreadsheet
link, you got a username/password prompt.
So, the bottom line is that you have to go through their home page at least
once.

spreadsheet links? I just reproduced your err message by closing my browser
completely, then trying the link.
If I'm on the investors.com site, but not signed in, I get the login page.
If I don't signin at all, I see your error.
