Hi Patrick,

Record date, whether for a stock split or a dividend payment, is simply the
date when the Transfer Agent (who maintains the books on share ownership)
will close the books. Payments then will go on that basis. So if you sold on
April 15, your account will get the split, which you will then owe to
whomever you sold the shares to. Easiest way to tell if you are entitled to
split shares if by the price, if you buy/sell at the old price, then the
shares are yours. If the transaction price is post split, then you are not
entitled.

Have a question about splits, I know they always work out, so sort of idle
curiosity,
but is someone feels like undertaking an explanation, it would be nice to
clear this
up. Here is the note on the AMAT stock split -

"Applied Materials rallied 65 cents to $52.67. The chip equipment maker set
a
two-for-one split effective Apr. 16 for shareholders of record on Apr. 1.
The
company also held an analyst meeting Thursday. UBS Warburg's Byron
Walker said the company opened the meeting by saying Spring was around the
corner for the industry and the capital equipment recovery was in progress."

I know if I buy AMAT on say April 15, if that is a market day, I will get
the
stock split the next day, curious why they always mention shareholders of
record on a certain day, in this case April 1?
