MessageHi Chas,
When I was writing my original note, I was going back to a previous FTD =
in the market, that is, the one after 9/11. The rally that started with =
the FTD 9/28 was fairly strong, but then began sputtering in =
mid-December. The market reversed a bit right after the first of the =
year, but then by mid-January started falling apart after multiple =
distribution days and killed the rally. You're right that we've had a =
fresh FTD on about 3/3 or 3/4. In WON"s terms, "this is what you look =
for in a follow-through confirmation of a new market rally: The Nasdaq, =
Dow or S&P 500 must stay above the point at which they bottomed. Then, =
between the fourth and seventh days of the rally attempt (or sometimes =
later), look for at least one of the indexes to gain at least 2% on =
higher volume than the prior session. " Mark Boucher of =
TradingMarkets.com uses WON's FTD, but also adds what he calls "a =
plurality of signals." This is not contrary to WON's notions, but =
quantifies some of the additional clues that WON tells us we should look =
for when determining market health, such as new highs in strong =
industries vs new lows in weak industries, up vs down volume, etc. =
Though there are signs that things are not as dire in the market as some =
would have us believe, the jury's still out. The Nasdaq has now posted 2 =
heavy distribution days close together, the S&P has had a couple of =
lighter distribution days recently, and the Dow has had a couple of back =
to back distribution days. None of these officially kills the recent =
rally, but in my mind that means we're treading on iffy ground. I don't =
even know why I'm attempting to explain all this in my own words, =
because there's a terrific resource available written by Bill Lee. He's =
done a superb job of explaining market bottoms and tops at his website. =
And, though he's too humble to tell anybody about it here (so I'm just =
going to do it for him!), he has an amazing shareware tool that runs in =
Excel that does all these calculations for you and spits out a chart =
that shows the beginning and end of each rally according the WON's =
guidelines. Once I stumbled across his beta version, I started using it =
in place of my own manual notations at the end of each day. Check out =
his explanations of WON's guidelines at: =

Hi Katherine
Since I'm new to this CANSLIM and still learning...you wrote of the =
sept 01 ftd....was this for the market in general or do you have =
different % that you look for??? WON writes of the 1% ftd and there was =
a ftd in mar4 & mar6....both the DOW & NASDAQ are lower now ...does this =
mean we have to look for a new set of follow through days?? As always =
your comments are read with great interest.
Chas

Hi Duke,
Didn't you receive the special =
double-secret-forward-looking-X-Ray-sunglasses with your copy of HTMMIS?
Thanks for pointing out the typo, I meant 9/28/01!

Katherine,
You are so good...however, since it's almost the weekend, =
rhetorically speaking, how is it you know that September 28, 2002 is =
going to be an FTD?
Enjoy your weekend and, as you usually say, happy hunting!
