John --
As far as a 'true current CANSLIM stock,' I'm not sure I've seen one yet,
but I'm also relatively new to CANSLIM. For now, I'm using CANSLIM more for
learning and using the techniques to manage 'legacy' stocks (things I'd
bought before ever hearing of WON or CANSLIM). I used the IBD ratings and
chart concepts to pare down my existing stocks and try to implement the sell
rules. If I saw something meeting all CANSLIM criteria, I'd sell and put the
money to better use; for now, where it is is still doing better than money
market.
I read the 'N' in CANSLIM as "New Products, New Management, New Highs." I
think the new product / new service / new way of doing business is most
important, a change in management (somehow for the better) is second, and
the new price last. The new high has to do with price resistence from above.
Couple things on the current chart, though. New highs have been on at least
average volume and RS is into new high ground. 50-day line has only been
broken one day since early November. It's still overall #1 stock in the
group and the group is #2 in IBD's industry rankings. I would try to read in
IBD's commentary as raising my caution level, but would try to wait for sell
signals on my particular stock.
I don't know what you bought at or when you did it. So, hard to say whether
your buy or sell were 'mistakes.'
I DO know that I prefer regretting selling too soon over too late these
days. Much less expensive mistakes.

Ok I deferred to the experts here and sold my HOV......fortunately I am
$400 richer for my mistake. This why I bought:
a.. Chart looks to be in a "Base on top of a Base". Pg. 169 ... Looks
very similar to the example chart of Healthcare Compare Corp. O'Neil
states: "When the bearish phase in the overall market eventually ends, the
security will probably be one of the first to race into new high ground and
launch a tremendous advance."
b.. C: Five quarters of accelerated earnings: q1/01 .305 q2 /01
.477 q3/01 .709 q4/01 .739 and q1/02 .596 (Analysts foresee and
strong q2/02)
c.. A: HOV 5 year annually earnings per share show outstanding growth.
d.. N: "Buy stocks as they are making new highs"
e.. S: Small market cap and volume increases as stock has moved up.
f.. L: One of the top stocks in the strongest industry group.
g.. I: Strong but not too strong institutional ownership.
h.. M: N/A : bear market -- M does not apply for any current
tocks. ---> CANSLI
Perhaps someone could point out an example of a true current CANSLIM
stock -- for educational purposes only ;-).
