Hi John,
With regard to your questions:
(1) "...do you find yourself in need of IBD..."-- "Need" is perhaps too =
strong a word. I used to start every day by reading the IBD cover to =
cover (along with a good Starbucks, of course)....Reading HTMMIS helped =
build a context for CANSLIM, but I really "learned" CANSLIM from the =
IBD. But those needs have changed over the years as I have developed my =
own mining techniques. So, now IBD is a news and learning resource for =
me, but my stock mining, tracking and selection is done independently so =
that I am not biased by the IBD editors. (My test of the quality of my =
mining is to count the number of times that a stock appears highlighted =
in IBD before I've already mined it. It happens rarely, but when it =
does, I review my methodology.) There are 2 features that I read each =
and every day without fail, the Big Picture page (there's just nowhere =
else you can go for this kind of market view) and the Investors Corner =
(can never know enough about investing) . I skim the front page and then =
later, when I have time on the weekend, I'll read the additional =
features such as The New America and Smart Investor.=20
(2) On "Where The Big Money Is Flowing" ....Since this feature became =
available in live form on the Investors.com site, I look there during =
the day rather than to the paper. In this case, since appearances are =
volume-based (for stocks meeting certain proprietary rankings), I feel =
the stocks showing up are less inclined to be editor selected as are =
other mentions in the IBD and so I feel more comfortable using it. I =
think any service that allows you to track volume during the day would =
work, however. The real trick is to have a preselected list of stocks =
worth watching and that's where your mining techniques make all the =
difference. I see that David T. has already listed some suggestions. =
Another option is Medved's free QuoteTracker (www.quotetracker.com). =
Mike Gibbons from this list has also been developing an add-in =
(QTMonitor) that allows you to monitor volume/price activity and issue =
alarms on a preselected list of stocks. I currently use Schwab's =
StreetSmartPro for setting alarms, but only because my puny PC doesn't =
have enough RAM to run Mike's nifty QTMonitor and my gargantuan =
watchlist spreadsheet simultaneously!
Happy 4th of July,
Katherine

Hello Katherine,
Your assessment of DGO and IBD are very interesting. I have been =
mining IBD for several years and am in total agreement with you on the =
time involved to keep a ready list available. But now with the =
Investors.com, a couple of saves per day of their spoon fed screens does =
at least give an education into how to do this. I guess I would have to =
at least have bull market before I could consider a subscription to DGO. =
=20
So I have 2 questions for you. First, do you find yourself in need of =
IBD when you subscribe to DGO once you have studied the market in IBD =
for several years. And second, the most important piece of information =
in IBD is Where The Big Money Is Flowing on each exchange......is there =
a place, site or screen to get high volume candidates to study. IBD =
takes the work out of this one but like you say, am I being spoon fed =
just a tiny group of possibilities?
Thanks for your advice, I and I'm sure others value your opinion =
highly.

Hi Duke,
The basic DGO is about $600/year.... only the additional tools bring =
it up to about $1000.=20
Truth is, until recently, the features/charts etc. were not =
available at the IBD site and DGO was a godsend. It's beyond me how DGO =
can justify the price tag (DGO....hope you're reading THIS message) =
given that so many of the features are now available at no charge on the =
IBD site.
However, an Excel report with 2500 stocks is not really the issue. =
It just matters if you mine a particular way. For example, I find it =
terribly disjointed and time consuming to take reports from the IBD =
itself or the Investors.com site, meld them together into some cohesive =
strategy, gather the appropriate info one by one from the charts, track =
the info and manage the updates day to day and expect to have a reliable =
strategy for monitoring stock movement, market health and selecting good =
stocks for purchase. It can be done, and even though you can automate =
some of the info gathering via Excel/Access, it doesn't necessarily give =
you a reliable, time-effective process. The bottom line for me? Time is =
money. I've had similar discussions with many folks over the years and =
it always boils down to this. If you see time as money and you prefer to =
have a methodical strategy for mining for buyable CANSLIM candidates =
that does not rely on what the IBD or Investors.com editors may choose =
to highlight, then you'll choose DGO. If those things don't matter, the =
IBD and the Investor.com site are more than sufficient.

Investors.com provides daily/weekly charts, info on stocks within =
the same industry, proprietary info (RS on their charts), etc. I need =
something provided by DGO that is worth the $1000 premium. I don't want =
to wrestle with 2500 stocks. I can generate my own reports using a combo =
of EXCEL/ACCESS.
My question clarified: What can DGO provide that I can't get from =
IBD?=20
Thanks for your help.
