Now that the expectation of 75,000 new jobs being created was originally considered to be only 39,000, I wonder what the first and second revisions will do to that number. In addition, the number of announced layoffs was over 10% higher than the previous month. Doesn't necessarily sound like an improving economy, just more spin. Fred -----Original Message----- From: owner-canslim@lists.xmission.com [mailto:owner-canslim@lists.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Tom Worley Sent: Saturday, July 06, 2002 2:31 PM To: CANSLIM Subject: [CANSLIM] Worley's Weekend Weeview ECONOMICS ISM's index of manufacturing activity not only blew past expectations, it posted a bigger gain than in May to 56.2 rather than slipping to 55.5 as expected. Fifth month in a row of expansion. Virtually every component of the index was up strongly. Noteworthy was the employment index, which barely missed crossing into expansion territory. Construction spending fell 0.7%, expectations were for a 0.2% rise. Level of spending is still higher than at any time in 2001 after earlier big jumps. New unemployment claims continue to fall, this time below expectations, and mark the fifth straight week under 400K. The four week average is the best in three months. OECD's (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) economic indicator moved up for the seventh straight month. Biggest single gainer was Britain, up 1.1. Among the Euro countries, Germany was strongest gaining 0.6. USA gained 0.2 after losing ground last month. As expected, overall unemployment edged up to 5.9% while the increase of 36,000 new jobs fell well under expectations of 75K. The gain of 36K was ahead of the downwardly revised 24K for May. Still, the figures continue to improve over first quarter, when there continued to be a small loss of jobs. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - -- WORLEY'S WATCHLIST WANNABES This list is in no way intended to recommend any stocks to the group. It is a part of my regular assessment of the health of CANSLIM's "M" and, as the name implies, only intended to identify some stocks with constructive chart patterns that may be worth WATCHING (and of course doing your own due diligence). I am employed in Operations by a US Broker Dealer, however everything presented by me is strictly my own ideas and in no way should be taken to reflect the views or opinions of my employer. I typically list stocks with both RS and EPS ranking of 80 or better, and try to exclude stocks undergoing any merger / acquisition / buyout scenario. I no longer will look at earnings forecast for this year and next due the confusing data presented by DGO. I do no other due diligence, that is your responsibility. I will note any CANSLIM patterns I see, such as c&h, double (or triple) bottoms, or flat bases (shown as Bx where "x" is the # of weeks, IMO). I will also note LLUR (Lower Left Upper Right) even though it is not exactly a CANSLIM pattern. The population of stocks I am reviewing this weekend appears stable from last week. ALV - strange c&h??
