Robert,

I think Katherine was acknowledging (perhaps unknowingly) a theory know as
"reciprocal altruism" (Robert Trivers, 1971) wherein the human species has
developed an unconscious recognition that an altruistic act will be be
repaid in some way that provides Darwinian benefits to the giver. This trait
is more highly developed in some people than others ;-)

In the context of this list, it seems to me that the benefits of altruism
are: shared knowledge makes us all wiser and hopefully richer (certainly
intellectually if not financially); we gain the esteem of our peers which
raises our own self-esteem; and the Darwinian payoff is that we can better
provide for our offspring.

I don't know anything about Katherine's family, extended or otherwise, but
I'll bet they'll reap the benefits of her altruism this side of the pearly
gates.

Aloha,

Mike Gibbons

  Hello Katherine,

"Not a single person who shares information and knowledge does so without
an expected return of some kind."

If that's true, I still haven't figured out what exactly you hope to get
out of all the seemingly selfless help you give to so many. If it's brownie
points in heaven, I think you're whole extended family would qualify at this
point ;0)

  Robert W. Elmer
