Donald, "b/o" is just my shorthand, and that of others, for a breakout =
from a basing pattern, saves keystrokes.
Any base with an upwardly rising price would be suspect. You want to see =
it flat to a slight downtrend, with volume drying up.
With CTSH, I see several possible cup & handle formations on a daily, =
one year chart. First and largest pattern is the period from 12/26/01 to =
4/1/02 (left rim to right rim of the cup). This is followed by a fairly =
sharply declining price thus as a handle, it would be very weak. When I =
first mentioned this stock in my Weekly Weeview (www), I was looking at =
the more recent pattern starting 5/31/01 when it began a sharp drop on =
heavy volume. It formed a very steep cup, nearly a funnel, then =
recovered into a flat base starting 6/13. On 7/16, it rose well above =
this flat base (the b/o) on heavy volume. Less than the ideal time =
period for a good basing formation, but done in a tough market. That is =
where I mark the breakout, using this flat base as the handle of a =
poorly formed and steep cup.
CANSLIM teaches us to buy on a b/o from a basing formation, of which c&h =
is one of the most favored and popular. This b/o on 7/16 is the best =
b/o I see on this stock, as it was accompanied by major volume. The =
trading pattern following this b/o I consider to be a consolidation of =
about a 12% gain. Normally this would not be a significant gain, but =
measured against what all the indexes did during this time period, it is =
significant and was a gain maintained on volume, even on the down days.
This is not a buyable base, nor did I mean to suggest that, but rather =
suggests a strong stock exhibiting leadership. Thus this is one worth =
watching for when "M" tells us we should be starting to put cash back =
into the market.=20

Donald, I see the past week of trading as building a new base =
(consolidation) after the earlier b/o on 7/16. As bases go, not that =
impressive by itself, but is impressive for holding up after a =
substantial b/o, and doing so in a very negative market.

P.P.S. At this writing I'm no longer confused, and gladly so since I =
bought into CTSH a couple of days ago despite my confusion. I guess I =
got lucky since I'm not a master of canslim.
