Kent:
This (shell-shocked investors) is the main reason that IBD states, in
IBD's editorial today, that the Fed should cut interest rates. To put it in
James Carville speak, 'it's no longer the economy stupid, but rather: "It's
the psychology, stupid."
To paraphrase the editorial, IBD says that the even though the economy
is coming around (albeit feebly), it is the psychological pounding that
individual investors have taken since 2000 that will prompt investors to
start investing again once interest rates are cut-and which will also boost
more IPO's, venture capitalizations and start-up businesses.
Personally, I think this is too much to ask, and think that business and
personal tax cuts are more likely to lead to a rejuvenation of both the
economy and the stock market.

"MILLER: At the heart of the decline in rates is pessimism about
equities. Shell-shocked investors have been moving money out of stocks
for the safety of bonds. That has pushed bond prices higher and yields
lower. Investors yanked more than $68 billion out of stock funds during
the summer. More than $56 billion went into bond funds. But volatility
in the stock market is not the only worry on investors' minds.
