I read recently that the Fed is a collection of privately held companies (NY, Washington, Boston etc).  Is this correct?  Can anyone knowledgeable about the history of the Fed shed light on this?  

Also the only members of the Fed selected by the US Senate are in the Washington Fed.  The Washinton Fed then selects on their OWN the members making up the remaining Fed companies.  

The Fed may also be in violation of the US Constitution by printing money as a priate company. 
 
How's that for a history research project.  I had always assumed that the Fed was a part of the Federal government.
