one way I used to evaluate mutual funds performance (and the manager) was how they handled capital gains, and the resulting tax effect on their shareholders. In a year like we have had, the special tax rules that apply to funds should permit them to offset every single dollar of gains so shareholders are not punished with paying capital gains taxes on a losing position. If they don't, fire them and find a fund that looks after its shareholders. One alternative, if you don't want to be stuck paying taxes from capital gains when the fund's NAV is down for the year is simply to sell it prior to the payout of capital gains. You take a loss, instead of receiving taxable income, wait out the 30 days for the wash rule, and buy it back if you really like it. WARNING: see your accountant or H&R Block or whatever for professional tax advice, I am only a tax expert on my own return. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Winston Little" <wlittle1@peoplepc.com> To: <canslim@lists.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 3:09 PM Subject: Re: [CANSLIM]list is very quite now! (was test) October Markets: Nine significant market bottoms occurred in Octobers of the past century (1900-1999). Eight of the twenty largest numerical market drops occurred during Octobers. October is year end for many Mutual Funds, so they sell to take their losses and also sell gainers to take their gains. Thus holders of record in the fund, even new buyers, get named to the IRS as recipient of these taxable gains, even if the funds end up with a net loss. What a lovely deal for a new buyer in the fund......lose money and get named to pay taxes on gains that someone else received, and also assessed for a management fee. Nov. through Dec. are winners (12% average) in all years from 1900 through 1999 (except 1929-1932 when market lost 90% of its value). ....lost 90% of its value ..... that sounds like right now..... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Wahl" <pjwahl@attbi.com> To: <canslim@lists.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 02, 2002 2:28 PM Subject: Re: [CANSLIM]list is very quite now!
