n errant order to sell $4 billion in stocks briefly roiled the market =

can produce huge risks.
The New York Stock Exchange said that Bear, Stearns had intended to =
place an order to sell $4 million worth of stocks in the Standard & =
Poor's 500-stock index, but instead asked to sell $4 billion. The order =
was entered about 3:40 p.m.
The orders were canceled within minutes, but not before $622 million in =
stock had been sold. The exchange said that Bear, Stearns had assured it =
that "the risk from the executed orders had been substantially hedged."=20
