Bush got a TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) good until 10/16 to reopen the
ports. Longshoremen are expected to return to work tomorrow night. Various
reports I have read peg the economic cost to date approaching $15 billion,
and estimate it will take anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks to completely
eliminate the backlog. On 10/16 the Federal judge will hear arguments
whether to impose the 80 day cooling off period under Taft Hartley. If
imposed, will take us thru the Christmas shopping season. Could give the
markets a little encouragement tomorrow. However, not helping Japan so far,
down another 172 points (-1.98%) and threatening to break under 8,500 (level
where losses on some banks holdings estimated to threaten their required
capital requirements).
