Tom, I agree that fewer people in America today get dirt under their nails = than in decades past, but I think a few immutable facts of life will = guarantee a non-service labor force for the future: 1. Education is expensive and is/will get more expensive (even outpacing = inflation). Therefore more blue collar than white collar. 2. People keep having children, people keep living longer, therefore = (naturally) more people in the bottom 50% of the socio-economic ladder. = Most of these people will be engaged in manual labor rather than = services (at least historically) 3. America (and increasingly the world) is a consumer of goods. Services = do not create goods, laborers create goods. My soap box is making an eerie cracking noise- I better get off now. One = last thought though- in the short term (decade?) the fact that we are a = service economy will usher in a new school of thought on the markets. One of the things that impressed me about the character of this country was how the USA went to work when we entered = WW II, and in a short time were able to pump out more Liberty ships ( and a number of other designs as well) faster than the U boats could sink = them. They were not a thing of beauty, nor intended to last long (altho many = were still sailing decades later). But the hull capacity that was created was phenomenal, particularly considering that many jobs as welders, ship fitters, riveters, etc. were being done by women that had never worked outside the home before. Technology and industry has changed in the past = 50+ years, but I doubt that this country could respond in a similar way = today in the face of an outside threat (terrorism??, economics??). But the = attitude and performance of the tens of thousands involved in the removal and recovery of the damage done at both the World Trade Center towers and = the Pentagon still gives me hope that I am being too pessimistic. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Triffet" <btriffet@earthlink.net> To: <canslim@lists.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 09, 2002 1:02 AM Subject: Re: [CANSLIM] Worley's Weekend Weeview - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Logan, Scott L." <slogan@gosafeguard.com> To: <canslim@lists.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 1:07 PM Subject: RE: [CANSLIM] Worley's Weekend Weeview > I don't think the American public has realized the effects of losing = our > manufacturing jobs. But I like most everyone else enjoy = the low > cost goods that American factories( and Unions ) have priced = themselves out > of. > (Note: very off topic now but hey, the markets slow...) Hear hear! Having been a machinist for 15 yrs and an NC programmer for = the last 7, I've watched the manufacturing industry nose dive. It's even = more shocking to read and hear things like, "the loss in manufacturing jobs = this month was offset by an increase in the service sector". Offset???! I = guess if your not in direct ly employed by manufacturing, it doesn't = matter...yet. I don't think we're going to see any change in the markets till there is = a real change in the manufacturing sector. It was fine while everyone was preoccupied with the shooting stars of the internet and technology. Now, = we must make REAL products that can will be used by people now...not just = the future. Each day I look at IBD I only see charts and comments about companies = that require the manufacturing sector to improve. Ex: Financial, banks, = consumer goods, and medical related. None of these sectors can exist in a vacuum. Hopefully things will pickup. - -Bill - - - -To subscribe/unsubscribe, email "majordomo@xmission.com" - -In the email body, write "subscribe canslim" or - -"unsubscribe canslim".
