If = you look at APOL's chart on a daily basis, it looks a little choppy, = with many ups and downs. So you are tempted to try to time it so you get = in on a brief pullback. But look at its chart on a weekly basis, and the = trend is quite apparent. It really didn't matter, so long as you are = investing for the long term, if you picked it up on a pullback, or as it = hit a new high, so long as you are not going to be upset if you spend a = few days or even weeks with a small loss in case it pulls back = immediately. What you want to focus on is finding the trend line. The 50 dma often = gives you this, but it can be almost any moving average line. For the = short term traders / investors this becomes their entry point, but only = as it it rising from this technical support line. For longer term = investors who dislike ever having even a small loss, this works as well. = The danger of trying to find the perfect entry point is that by the time = it happens, several weeks may have passed, and its already 10 or 20% = higher than when you first started watching it.
