Hi Andy,

By hand? Heavens no! I'm like you...I've written an extensive set of macros that
pulls data from several free and paid sources. It takes me about 10 minutes each
evening to click a few buttons and then update my entire spreadsheet which
includes both technical and fundamental criteria. I keep the last year's
price/volume info on each stock so that I can calculate moving averages, U/D
volumes, accum/distribution, etc. (I use, for example, Retriever, to pull the
price/volume for new stocks added to the spreadsheet each week.) I make
extensive use of the Custom View feature within Excel to look at subsets of
information on the stocks. Probably the biggest difference in our approach is
that I don't preselect stocks to go onto the list except by minimum price and
average volume. ($6/30K is the floor and its designed for minimum liquidity more
than anything else.). That way, I can look at what's moving whether or not it
meets all my personal standards for a buyable candidate. After many years of
keeping a "master watchlist" of stocks I found through various sources, I
switched to this approach in late 2000. Since all stocks in an industry are
listed, for example, I can easily perform industry analysis and find which
stocks are also moving with the stock in question. This eliminates all my
personal biases and keeps me from missing good stocks that may not have caught
my eye on a list or in an article somewhere. It also helps me to ask "what if,"
to look at the preponderance of evidence on a stock and to keep from eliminating
good candidates by using overly restrictive filtering criteria to generate the
master watchlist itself.

Katherine

My spreadsheet is a combo of Stock Investor Pro and a couple excel macros. It
takes only about 5-10 to generate that output for any set of symbols.

  Katherine,

I am interested in how you generate your data. Did you write some software to
compile all of that info or do you do everything by hand?

  Andy

The spreadsheet is Andy's handiwork. My understanding is that he uses the
AAII (Stock Investor Pro) program to collect the data, though I'll leave it
to him to confirm that when he next checks his list email.
