MessageHi Duke,

Thanks for the feedback. It reminds me of a breakfast I had with an investing
buddy in early March of 2000. We were reviewing the Big Picture as we usually
did over the first cup of coffee and in the commentary was the sentence "If you
are not already out of this market, you should be." I was already about 50% cash
at the time, but actually argued with him (and the paper) that "things would
pick back up." He read it to me 3 more times and reminded me of all the failed
breakouts I'd been grousing about over the previous couple of months. I went
home that day and cleaned out another 40%, grumbling that he was probably wrong,
the paper was probably wrong and that I was a real chump for lightening up even
though the remaining stocks were just beginning to roll over a bit (My journal
note that day...."leaders always roll over last"). It became clear pretty
quickly that the paper was correct and that my friend was right to harp on the
point as he did. We kick ourselves that we didn't keep a copy of the paper that
day, as we have relived the incident many times over the years as we've watched
the market continue to roll over wave after wave. Sometimes a sentence like that
just reinforces your gut and helps override your head. My friend, already
retired at the time, has been out the entire 3 years, waiting for the right "M".
I've been riding CANSLIM on the brief upwaves--challenging and do-able, but it
takes a whole new skill set to do it over the easy 90's. My friend is always
there to cheer me on, but I can't help but notice he has far fewer new crow's
feet these days than I do. MILSNAC...good idea!

Katherine

  Katherine:

I (and others, I'm sure) appreciate your analysis and commentary that
accompanied your latest CSH list. I've been on the sidelines since very early
last year, and was surprised when I downloaded your current list that the most
recent one in my "Katherine" file was 7/22/02! I haven't been just on the
sidelines, "Duke has left the building"!

However, I continue to get that wrenching knot in the stomach as IBD keeps
reminding us (DAILY?) of how smart we would have been if we'd just listened to
them and moved to the sidelines when they TOLD us to! Whenever that was!

I mention this, because I think all too often, well-intended (or formerly so)
Canslimmers confuse IBD's terminally contradictory editorial rhetoric with the
fact that pure CANSLIM is, quite simply, a very sensible way to select stocks.
And it all starts, as you so well put it below, with market bad (or sideways)
don't pass go; market up, pass go, collect $200 and.....

Maybe, just maybe, more people would get it if we reverse the acronym. Think
about it: MILSNAC. And unless the M is ripe for picking, forget ILSNAC.

  How hard is that?

  Duke
