Hi Jeff,
It's hard to pin down the "best" of my library, so let me just select a few that
would be most appropriate for a new CANSLIMer (some of these overlap):
Straight forward technicals/reading charts:
- -Stan Weinstein "Secrets for Profiting in Bull & Bear Markets". Straight forward
look at charts, moving averages, entry, exit, setting stops. Also covers
shorting in the most common sense fashion I've seen in any book.
- -Nicolas Darvas "How I Made $2m in the Stock Market". Gets down to the essence
of looking for support and resistance. Give you a simplistic way to view stock
selection, entry/exit, and charts in general. Darvas calls them "boxes" but the
general concept holds true. Also a very good take on how overtrading and second
guessing your rules can get you in *big* trouble.
- -William L. Jiler "How Charts Can Help You in the Stock Market." Very
straightforward view of reading charts. Short, sweet and to the point.
- -O'Neil "HTMMIS". Lays the foundation. Reread it at least once per year and find
new depth of understanding each time.
- -Investor's Corner. It used to be impossible to list this as a resource. I've
saved the articles since before the column was even called "Investor's Corner."
It used to be organized into sections in a "CANSLIM binder" but has now expanded
to a file drawer, organized and filed by topic. I pull a folder on a particular
subject and read/reread the examples repeatedly. Again, new depth of
understanding in each read. Use the archives for this and "Ask Bill" to start a
regular study program.
- -Weblink. This is the equivalent of creating your own examples binder, though I
think all CANSLIMers should save examples that catch their eye, notate them, and
keep them for future reference. This, in addition to charts for each trade with
personal annotations are an enormous learning tool. Go back to old charts, read
your personal notations and see how far you've come over the years. Note things
you missed when the trade was "live".
Accounting/Fundamentals:
- -If you're not familiar with accounting/financial terms, get the basics under
your belt. There are plenty of "Accounting 101" books, but find one that focuses
on reading and interpreting financial statements. There's one book in particular
that several members of the list have found to be a particularly good intro
book, but I'm blanking out on the title. (Hopefully ANN H. will see this and
remind me.)
- -Howard Schilit "Financial Shenanigans". I've read a lot of case studies and
other texts on this subject, but I like the author's take on things. Learn the
pitfalls of reading financial statements and you'll know what red flags to look
for when reviewing the details.
General:
- -Gerald M. Loeb "The Battle for Investment Survival." Sound investing principles
101. Originally published in 1935, the principles are timeless.
- -Edwin Lefevre "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator". The story of Jesse Livermore
who understood how to exploit the tape in both directions. Livermore was a mess,
but when he wasn't womanizing and spending money out the wazoo, he actually did
incredibly well. This and Loeb's book were extremely influential on O'Neil.
- -Benjamin Graham "The Intelligent Investor." Get down to the essence of what
creates value in a stock. These principles, though applied differently in
specific trading methodologies are nonetheless universal. Though an important
book, it's a sleeping pill, so be careful where you're sitting when you read it.
- -In general, the more you read on styles *other* than CANSLIM, the more you see
the underlying thread that unites them all. Have a keen awareness of what makes
a trading system successful is the key to exploiting it.
Psychology:
- -Ruth Barrons Roosevelt "12 Habitudes of Highly Successful Traders." No doubt
about it, traders are their own worst enemies. An honest assessment of personal
attitudes and how they get in the way of good trading can make the difference
between success and failure. Short, sweet and powerful book.
- -Mark Douglas "The Disciplined Trader". Mark wouldn't admit it to me, but I
think his methodologies are deeply rooted in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
Covers belief systems, changing behaviors, etc., all NLP stuff and very
powerful.
- -John G. Kappas "Success Is Not an Accident." You want real tools to manage your
behaviors? Set up a mental bank. This book is long out of print, but if you can
find a copy it's worth the effort.
That should keep you busy for a while!
Katherine

Hey Katherine,
I was just curious about your recommendations on book readings. DMX gave some
great choices.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
Those are 3 good books. Only about 50 more to go!
I actually think that Van Tharp's book and Stan Weinstein's book are the first
pillars of wisdom here, both well-written and logical. Van & Stan, sounds like
a car dealership.
Here is a basic list I made up for a young man (college boy) who wanted to
learn about TA and trading. It's about 1/3 the books I have (I find Farley,
Pring and Dorsey to be harder slogging in the initial rounds, so put them off to
later--by that time you'll be able to choose your own books) and I'm sure that
others may vote for different books in the intial cut, but that's what makes a
market, even in books:
E= Elder, Trading for a Living
IBD= Investors Business Daily
M= Murphy, Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets
Ma= Moving Averages Simplified (Drokes)
Mc=McMillan, Options as a Strategic Investment
Mo= Morris, Candlestick Charting Explained
Ni= Nison, Beyond Candlesticks
Vt= Van Tharp, Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom
Ta= Technical Analysis of Stocks & Commodities (magazine)
W= Weinstein, Secrets of Profiting in Bull & Bear Markets
Things I don't find helpful in the early stages of learning are: Gann,
Fibonacci and Bulkowski's chart analysis.

Jeff,
If you are a college student then I suggest you spend zero dollars for
software. You no doubt have access to high speed internet access (aka the Big
Pipe). You should be able to utilize a lot of free sites (including this one)
to get some education. I'd suggest using the MSN site for scanning, the free
section of stockcharts.com for charting (and education) and the library for
borrowing books. You can lurk at a number of for-pay investment sites (SI comes
to mind) and learn from a number of very wise people. Most investment sites
have an extensive education spot (check out stockcharts, Bernie Schaefer).
If you're going to college in or near a big city, I'd suggest signing up for
free presentations/seminars offered by TC2K, Metastock, 21st Century Investor
Educ. Center (options), etc. If your college has a business school you might
look for a finance course, if it's Univ of Penna, you might hang out at the
Wharton School, etc. Also, check to see if your school has an investment
club/group/etc. These can be very sophisticated, although they almost always
are enamored of an FA approach.
Btw, "I just got finished reading 3 stock books and I'm getting anxious
about trading" is a dangerous sentence to read. The market stands ready,
willing and able to separate you from your brokerage account. I'm not saying
"don't tread," but rather, "tread very carefully."
Which 3 stock books did you read?

Does anybody have any recommendations for stock software? I'm looking for
getting the most for my $ plus I'm a college student so, I really don't have to
much money to spend (<$100). Sorry if I'm asking too many questions but it's my
first day and I just got finished reading 3 stock books and I'm getting anxious
about trading.
Thanks,
Jeff H.
