FYI - based on the article from reuters below it seems like most of the
activity yesterday was due to new products shipping out to the stores for
back to school. I still believe that there is still some time to buy LF, it
seems that around $35 is the resistance. If there is strong volume today
another BO above $35-$36 then I would think about buying.
There was an earlier email that stated the following IBD #'s"
LF rating according to IBD
EPS Rate: 60
RS: 73
Industry Strength: C+
SMR: B
Acc/Distr: C+
I would like to add my 2 cents. I believe IBD takes into consideration
quarterly growth. In the toy industry a majority of sales (70% or so) are
in the 3rd and 4th qtr so look at the current vs prior year qrtr when your
doing your analysis or year vs year. If you look at their annual data:
2000 2001 2002
Revenue 160M 314M 532M
Income -2M 10M 43M
So as you can see, the financials have been great. The financials were
achieved during a recession, a Long Beach port strike, the political
climate, and a time when K-Mart declared bankruptcy. In the toy industry
there is the Big 4: Walmart, Toys R Us, Target, and Kmart which account for
50% - 70% of all toy sales in the US. Also keep in mind that LF just
expanded internationally into Germany a few months ago.
Also with industry strength being a C+ you can think of it in two ways: The
toy industry is mature or that LF is placed in the wrong category of the toy
industry. I think it should be placed in its own category called electronic
learning. It is a cross between a toy and an educational tool or book.
I work for a competitor so I have some industry knowledge. Fisher Price's
new e-book is very impressive and uses the mouse pad technology on a laptop
so that when you press on the book it automatically talks without a stylus.
Granted Fisher Price does look like they have a great new product (I was in
a presentation that showed the functionality of the book) and there has been
a lot of good press and Mattel is planning one really pushing the product.
Wall Street always looks into the future and with the upcoming school and
Christmas season most of LF earnings are still yet to come.
I bought LF at 26 and again at 30 and though I like the company I am still a
little skeptical because there seems to be resistance at $35 and it seems to
me that we are in a trading range.
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions about the industry please
feel free to ask me.
LeapFrog shares rise as new toys hit stores
Wednesday August 20, 1:45 pm ET
By Angela Moore
NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Shares of LeapFrog Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:LF -
News) rose sharply on Wednesday, as the company rolled out its new line of
electronic learning toys and braced for a market-share battle with giant
toymaker Mattel Inc. (NYSE:MAT - News).
Emeryville, California-based LeapFrog is launching LeapPad Plus Writing, an
updated version of its core LeapPad product, and Little Touch, for children
6 months to 36 months old.
At the same time, Fisher-Price, a unit of Mattel, is bringing out PowerTouch
Learning System, which will compete with the LeapPad.
"It is very significant that LeapFrog's new products have hit shelves in a
timely way; we're heading into back-to-school season right now," said
Natalie Walrond, an analyst with Pacific Growth Equities. "We were very
impressed with LeapPad Plus Writing ... I expect it to do well."
LeapFrog's shares were up $2.93, or 9.3 percent, at $34.54, on the New York
Stock Exchange (News - Websites), after hitting a session high of $34.99.
Mattel's shares were up 51 cents, or 2.6 percent, at $20.03.
Both LeapPad and PowerTouch teach reading, numbers and basic skills in an
electronic "book" format. Fisher-Price's PowerTouch is geared toward 3- to
8-year- olds, while the LeapPad is meant for ages 4 and up.
In addition, LeapPad uses an attached stylus to activate lessons, but kids
can operate PowerTouch with their fingers.
The LeapPad Plus Writing combines the core LeapPad product with an emphasis
on learning writing and math.
LeapFrog's Little Touch has the same basic platform as LeapPad, but is
designed for very young children to use with adult assistance.
The launch of the PowerTouch Learning System is part of Fisher-Price's plan
to nab a larger share of the market for preschool electronic learning toys.
Fisher-Price plans to spend an unprecedented amount of marketing dollars to
promote it -- nearly three times what it has historically spent on other new
products.
"It's certainly a possibility these two companies could grow the category
and end up doing well with it, but it's too early to declare a winner," said
Walrond. "We do prefer LeapFrog products, but Mattel's marketing engine
should not be discounted."

Mike,
Thanks for the clarification. Ironically enough, I too was shaken out of
this one. Turns out I was adding to my position was the left cup edge was
formed...imagine that!

Hi Mike,
As I see it, there are two components to a breakout - price and volume.
There is certainly room for debate over what period the volume must be
sustained to qualify for the 150% of adv - is it the exact day of the
breakout attempt or could the volume come in over several days? So provided
a stock closes above it's pivot on less than 150% volume, it could be
called
a weak breakout which may or may not be sustained over the next few days.
We
currently put a strict interpretation on the breakout rule and call it a
failed breakout if the price AND volume criteria are not met.
I feel there is less room for debate over the price action. Today's
intraday
high was above the previous pivot but it closed below indicating that the
sellers had the upper hand at the end of the day. Because the intraday high
was above the old pivot, a new pivot was set and I think it's appropriate
to
consider any future action in relation to that new pivot rather than the
old
one.
Regardless of these somewhat arcane issues, it seems to me that the current
price/volume action of LF is volatile and while obviously good profits can
be had, they are at a high risk. I have a low risk tolerance and would
avoid
it - I've been whipsawed out of this one before!

Mike Gibbons

Mike,
I understand that the way you described it is how the algorithm at
breakoutwatch will watch the chart, but from a human eye perspective, it
could be possible that the breakout will be sustained tomorrow.
If it is again on high volume, would it not offer a valid entry point? I am
speaking in a strictly WON interpretation, but of course I am going from
memory here, and it is the end of a long day.....
Did you make your software handle a failed breakout in this fashion because
of backtesting, or your interpretation of WON rules.
Keep up the great work.

LF failed to sustain its move above it's pivot point of $34.77 set on 6/18
today.
The effect of this is that has now set a new pivot point of today's high of
$34.99, with the left side of the cup unchanged at $35.70 on 12/03/02. The
next few days will show if it forms a new handle and presents another valid
entry point. If it were to do so, the action in the right side of the cup
leading up to the new pivot point would not seem to favor a strong breakout
from the new pivot point.

I personally hate watching something like the LF scenario, and having to
make the choice to sell off a stock that may be doing okay, that is giving
no sell signs, in order to free up capital to make the purchase. Then of
course, the new stock reverses, and the one you sold takes off to the
sky.....
Thanks for letting me hop on the "things that frustrate investors"
bandwagon. You Texans sure know how to draw a wagon train! :)

Kelly,
Sounds like you are asking if there is any way we
could figure out a way to predict the future. :).
j/k.
In any case, I know how you feel. I think everyone
here has been in that situation at one time or
another, and probably more times. Actually, it
happens to me a few times the last few months. Been
eyeing a stock for a long time, and seeing it about to
BO. Then it BO with a %10+ price. Then I just jump
up and down and curse at the air. :).
Look at the bright side, it is still withing the entry
point.
Your Fellow Texan,

Hi Mike,

As I see it, there are two components to a breakout - =
price and volume.
There is certainly room for debate over what period =
the volume must be
sustained to qualify for the 150% of adv - is it the =
exact day of the
breakout attempt or could the volume come in over =
several days? So provided
a stock closes above it's pivot on less than 150% =
volume, it could be
called
a weak breakout which may or may not be sustained =
over the next few days.
We
currently put a strict interpretation on the =
breakout rule and call it a
failed breakout if the price AND volume criteria are =
not met.

I feel there is less room for debate over the price =
action. Today's
intraday
high was above the previous pivot but it closed =
below indicating that the
sellers had the upper hand at the end of the day. =
Because the intraday high
was above the old pivot, a new pivot was set and I =
think it's appropriate
to
consider any future action in relation to that new =
pivot rather than the
old
one.

Regardless of these somewhat arcane issues, it seems =
to me that the current
price/volume action of LF is volatile and while =
obviously good profits can
be had, they are at a high risk. I have a low risk =
tolerance and would
avoid
it - I've been whipsawed out of this one =
before!
