You can find funds with low minimums using the Quicken.com FundFinder, at
http://www.quicken.com/investments/mutualfunds/finder/. There are 300
no-load funds with minimums of $250 or less (the smallest amount that you
can search on), but many are only sold through brokers. Some of the funds,
though, have no minimum purchases.

You may have to keep the money in the bank and invest quarterly in a fund.
You might look at opening a brokerage account with an online discount
broker with no minimum, such as Waterhouse, collect the money in the
account until you have enough to buy one of the funds in their no-load
family, and then make the purchase.

I'd suggest the Starlight Foundation, a reputable charity which grants
wishes to terminally or seriously ill children. You can find their web site
at http://www.starlight.org. They have chapters around the world.

You might also consider the Make A Wish Foundation, on the web at
http://www.wish.org.
