401(k) to Roth question.

I've heard advisors recommend transferring 401(k) balances
to Roth IRAs under certain circumstances.

Wouldn't the funds have to be transferred to an ordinary IRA first
and then converted to a Roth IRA, or can a 401(k) be converted
directly to a Roth IRA without having to pass through an ordinary
IRA on the way?

Just curious.
