I just received information on the new Treasury Direct program. Could someone give a quick explanation of the benefits of T-Bills/Notes/Bonds versus CDs? I live in IL, so our state tax is only 3%. I've put aside several months living expenses into rolling 6 month CDs. The interest rates are a little higher than my muni money market. I have $$ in stock funds for IRAs and 401(k), and have started to look at non-retirement investing. Given that my retirement $$ is 100% in stock funds, I wanted to diversify somewhat into bonds. But it seems that there really isn't a difference between CDs/cash and treasury bonds. For a little more risk, I will also put some $$ into either corp bond funds or maybe some flavor of muni bonds. But as far as the pure 'quality' aspect, why not just put the bulk of my bond $$ into CDs? My emergency fund is in CDs at netbank (formerly Atlanta Internet Bank), so the rates are very good. Thanks, Juli - -
