Fellow pers-finers: It's inspiring stories like those of Christina Ethridge and solid, detailed, knowledgeable advice like that of Rich Carreiro that make this list so valuable. On behalf of the lurking readers, I'd like to THANK YOU both, and Jeff the listserver, too, for donating your insight to us! *THIS* is what the spirit of the Internet is all about, and it's part of what people can see when they bid up the price of the Net stocks to such outrageous multiples. What a great democratizing medium. I was up to my eyeballs in debt about four years ago. I read "Your Money Or Your Life," watched the PBS shows "Affluenza" and "Escape From Affluenza," and followed their advice. While I'm not anywhere near the zany level of frugality of those featured, I did realize that I had to do something. I also saw that there was much fat that could be cut without too much pain. Small steps, and a couple of well-timed raises at work, allowed me to wipe out my plastic debt. Then when my car was paid off, I vowed to run it into the ground. Now I save about $300/month on the car payment alone. I've put this money into my E*Trade account, with some very good luck of late. If I can do it, anyone can. Read Christina's story again and be inspired.
