I'm wondering about the level of granularity for purposes of converting a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. Lets say I have a traditional IRA in a mutual fund account. The account is worth $10,000, and consists of contributions of $2,000/yr for 2 years and the earnings since contribution. Assume I meet the IRS guidelines for the conversion from traditional to Roth in 1999. I believe I can convert the $10,000 to a Roth IRA account. But is there a way I can split the $10,000 traditional IRA account into 2 accounts (say $5,000 each), thereby allowing me a smaller level of granularity for conversion to Roth? Thanks, Randy Marks - -
