I plan to go back to school for a year (grad school), and am
wondering if anyone can tell me the procedures necessary to
withdraw some money from my 401K.

The withdraws are not 'supposed' to be penalized, according to
IRS publication  590 on IRA's.  Will my employer automatically
withdraw the taxes and penalties (and I will get a refund of the
penalties), or am i responsible for paying them.

I would welcome any suggestions that anyone might have.
