Subject: Budget Percentages?

Some time ago, someone posted a chart which showed what percentage of
your income should go to what expenses in your life. My question is,
is this chart representing income before or after taxes are taken out?

     Auto - 12.0%
     Housing - 34.0%
     Entertain/Rec - 5.0%
     Clothing - 5.0%
     Healthcare - 4.0%
     Misc - 5.0%
     Food - 12.0%
     Insurance - 5.0%
     Debts - 5.0%
     Savings - 5.0%
     Invest - 8.0%

Subject: "Spiders"?

Anyone with thoughts on tax treatment of SPDR's (Standard and Poor's
Depository Receipts) sold on the AMEX? Specifically, is the prospect of
small realized capital gains such that one could achieve a high degree of
capital gains tax deferral by buying and holding over the long haul?

Check out www.financenter.com -- It has many, many calculators for
personal finance. u can also apply for a home/car/personal loan over
the internet -- I filled out a short pp. and about 3 days later I was
approved for a home loan -- I didn't take 10mins to do
it!

Texaco has a nice direct drip plan also (like Exxons) if you want to
buffer yourself in Oil Only $50 minimum a month direct from your
checking account -- see www.texaco.com.

I noticed you don't have any Tech stocks -- there will be much growth
in Tech over the next 20 years and beyond -- Many of the Techs drive
the market with that blossoming growth we have had in the past few
years (and little declines). You probably won't find any Tech stock
DRIPs, but you can easily find many agressive growth mutual funds out
there that have large tech stock holdings, such as Microsoft, Compaq,
Intel, 3Com, IBM (surprised?) and many others. Telecommunication
companies like AT&T, MCI & Sprint as well as Cable companies will also
be big players the next few years. Many people still see the phone
companies as income utilities, but I think not -- Some of the smaller
agile companies, like MCI, will be to manuver around in the market and
provide tremendous long term growth for its shareholders.

Just some food for thought.

Take care
Clayton.

Subject: Car Loan Refinancing?

Greetings.

I took a Car loan of $12000/- at 8.5% last June from a Credit Union.
Now, the same Credit Union has come out with a scheme, whereby I can get
my remaining loan refinanced at 7.75% APR. The catch is that I need to
borrow extra $1000.

I am trying to figure out if this deal makes any sense. If I refinance
the loan, my monthly payment is going to increase since I want to keep
the period same as before (4 years).

In the mean time, I also want to try and pay back the loan as soon as
possible. I may not be able to afford a bigger monthly payment, but I
plan to make a bigger payment of say $1000 once in a while whenever I
feel comfortable with my bank balance.

I would like know opinion of fellow persfiners on this situation. Should
I refinance the loan to 7.75% by taking extra $1000 or just continue
with my present payment at 8.5%?

Thanks !

This service already exists, but in two separate companies. For
sending faxes I use faxaway. www.faxaway.com. I send email to
######@faxaway.com where ###### is the fax number and off my document
goes. You can even send Word and other attachments.

For getting faxes, I got a telephone number via
jfax. www.jfax.com. Someone sends mail to my "fax" number and it is
forwarded to me via email. Jfax provides software to look at the
document and print it on your printer.

Works pretty good. My only complaint is jfax uses a proprietary format
for the fax and that makes it harder to use for other purposes.

Subject: Repeal TIAA-CREF's tax-exempt status?

This was in the CAUSE E-BULLETIN:

"This afternoon the Ways and Means Committee of the U.S. House of
Representatives is considering a tax-relief proposal that would repeal
TIAA-CREF's tax-exempt status for pension programs.

Information about the proposed legislation and its ramifications is
available on the TIAA-CREF Web site at:"

http://www.tiaa-cref.org/message.html

I was floored when I read this. It's like they are penalizing those of us
who work in higher education for trying to be responsilbe and saving to
take control of our future. I hope that other list members who work in
higher ed. will contact their Senators and Representitives and encourage
them to vote against this measure.

Even if you not employed in higher ed. this should make you wonder how long
it will be before they set their sites on your retirement money.

Subject: Graduate Tuition Deduction - Which Tax Forms?

Hello persfiners:
My company pays for my graduate courses.
I know that there was a law passed last year
that makes the tuition that is footed by the
company taxable.

My question:
Is this tuition taxable only for federal tax or
is it taxable for state and local, FICA medicare
as well. (My state is PA)

My impression was that the tuition
was only taxed at federal level. I just got
my refund check from payroll and they
have deducted all other taxes.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: Auto Routing & Residence Locating Programs?

Prior to accidentally deleting my Bookmarks, which were not backed up, I
had several programs, either shareware of freeware, which I had previously
downloaded and can no longer locate because I can't recall their exact
names. Two of them enabled me to merely specify the point of origin and
destination and they would give me a detailed itinerary to the destination
via auto. Two or 3 others would show me a street map and exact location
of either the residence or business, whichever was the case, merely by
plugging in an address. Can anyone help me identify & locate any of
these programs?
