Subject: Mutual Funds are Better than Stocks for the Average Person
I read with interest the comment from a subscriber who says mutual funds
are the only "intelligent" way for the average amateur investor to invest.
As an investment professional and someone who has managed to amass a small
fortune (becoming a large fortune), without much pain, I have to agree
strongly. I feel the average person has neither the time, money, skill or
the resources to research stocks properly to make the correct decisions.
Mutual funds offer huge advantages: easy diversification and professional
management some of the biggest. I probably own shares in 200-300 companies
in the dozen funds I own. To get that diversification by buyihg stocks
directly would cost millions, and I can do it with as little as $50 a
month times the number of funds I wish to dollar-cost average into. I can
hire some of the most brilliant money managers to look after my money, and
it cost very little. I can select the managers who have proven over time
that they can achieve returns of 10-15% or more (sometimes much better)
over long periods of time. I counsel everyone to invest in mutual
funds, not stocks. This is a strategy that is making my rich. It's also
making my wife rich, and she's totally a hands-off investor. there's
another benefit of funds; they're totally no-maintenance (or should be, if
you do 9t correctly).
Comments? I may now get some critical e-mail from stock investors. that's
okay. My strategy works great. I can demonstrate with my portfolio. It's
safer and easy. that's good enough for me.
