Last weekend, to avoid a humid weekend in Boston, my wife and I decided
to head north to New Hampshire. We thought it would be nice to go as far
north as we could, to enjoy the dry, cool, mountain air.
So we made a reservation at a bed and breakfast in the most northerly
part of NH that we could find. We ended up in Colebrook, NH.
Colebrook seemed to be as peaceful and idyllic a town as we've ever
been in. The owner of the B&B, Norma Leach, is a woman of many talents.
She makes incredible quilts, wood clocks, and dolls. The B&B was
immaculate. The breakfast, complete with homemade bacon, exquisitely cut
fruit, and pancakes with fresh picked blueberries, was as tastefully
prepared and presented as we've ever seen. The restaurant we ate at
(Sutton Place) served delicious food - the owner's daughter was our
waitress and the next day, she came by with her daughter just to greet us
and chat awhile. The B&B had 5 bedrooms and *no* locks. We had an
enchanting weekend. I wish I had grown up there instead of in New York
City.
The murders that took place there a few days later seemed so out of
place in such a setting. Sometimes the media plays up such contrasts. In
this case, I could not imagine events so out of place as what occurred in
Colebrook.
If you're interested, we bought 2 handmade quilts and a number of
jars of homemade jam from Norma. Her prices (my wife did some research)
are better than any stores near us, and so, I think, is the quality. She
sews to order. You can reach her at:
Norma Leach
1-800-479-3723
or
603-237-8629
Her B&B is called:
Sweet Dreams
184 Main Street
Colebrook, NH 03576
She's one of the nicest people we've ever met. That makes, for us,
the events of this week all the more tragic. If you call, mention my
name. PS - I don't have any financial interest in this. I'm just totally
shocked and hope that time can heal this gaping wound.
