persfiners. i'd be interested in receiving info/advice regarding an appropriate retirement plan for my significant other. she is one of only two employees (her boss is independent consul for a large dc firm) and they currently do not have a retirement plan. for background, she is 26 year's old and is paid $40k/year. her only other investment is a small-company growth fund into which she monthly dollar-cost averages. her firm uses paychex for its payroll. i contacted them regarding their 401-k recordkeeping, but the cost is probably too prohibitive: $1300 one-time setup fee and $95/month. (they're sending me literature on their plans, but i failed to ask if they would be willing to negotiate for a two-person firm.) given this scenario, i'm looking recommendations for an appropriate and not-so costly retirement plan (and/or a decent source for info). i've done some minor web browsing and downloaded irs pub 560 (retirement plans for the self-employed) which has specifics on the sep and simple. given that she will have to broach the subject with her boss and the possible significant expense to him, i'm wondering if i should simply get her to open an ira. thanks in advance, - -chris. cmataka@drc.com
