I'm exercising my right of editorial privilege because this affects my son and perhaps someone can do something about this. My son, Sam, and his girlfriend, planned a trip on a Windjammer cruise in the Caribbean, which starts tomorrow (Sunday, December 21, 1997). He ordered the tickets through a mail order travel agency in Virginia. The travel agency used UPS to send the tickets to Sam, who lives in Philadelphia. The problem is that Sam was out of town on Wednesday and Thursday, when UPS attempted to deliver the package. On Friday, he left a message with UPS that they could leave the tickets without his signature, but UPS refused to do this, reported that there was a 3rd attempt that was unsuccessful. Apparently, when this happens, they require that Sam contact UPS for a redelivery attempt. Both Sam and I tried the UPS toll free number (1-800-PICK-UPS). They told us that the package is locked in a truck in their warehouse in South Philadelphia. Normally, they're not open on Saturday, but today they are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The package is *definitely* at their warehouse, but we were told that NOBODY WOULD TALK TO SAM IF HE WENT DOWN TO THE PHILADELPHIA WAREHOUSE. The problem is that Sam's plane leaves Sunday. If he doesn't receive the tickets, he is out over $3,000 (the cost of the cruise for 2 people). Can anyone help him? If not, what kind of legal recourse does Sam have? Here are the relevant facts: UPS tracking number: S2856545758 The package is at the UPS distribution center at: 15 East Oregon Avenue Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Sam is willing to go there, but UPS "CUSTOMER SERVICE" IS TELLING HIM THAT NOBODY CAN TALK TO HIM BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LIMITED STAFF. I've used Federal Express and the USPS for package delivery and have always been able to pick up a package if I go down to the distribution center. The USPS has an ad about UPS NOT DELIVERING ON SATURDAY. THIS AD IS TRUE. Also, this is obviously a customer emergency and UPS has no way to bend the rules. WHY DO THEY HAVE A CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT? My recommendation is: NEVER GO UPS. If you can get any information to Sam, his number is: 215-662-5383 Thank you for any help or advice you can give. Sincerely, Ira ------------------------------ End of persfin-digest V4 #115 *****************************
