Try the following site. They provide daily updates and I know they have
the Hang Sang index. They also provide the software to update the data
files after the initial download. I have been using this free service
for about 3 weeks now and have not had any problems. There is even a
shareware charting program you can download. Its quite unique, you might
want to give it a try.
It's located at http://www.mobydata.com
Hope this helps, John

Both of these rates are good but one can get 8.9 cent calls either by
switching or not.

There is an article at
http://mutualfunds.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa051897.htm which goes into
Professional Certifications and how much study and time is involved. Hope
it helps. I have a BS in Metallurgical Engineering and actually programmed
for my career. I wanted to do something in finances. The company that I
worked for would pay for a Masters in Financial Planning (which is actually
a hard degree to find at most Universities) but would not pay for a CFP.
Hope it helps,
Marlene

Purdue aims to put physicists on Wall Street
1. PURDUE AIMS TO PUT PHYSICISTS ON WALL STREET
A hybrid master's degree program in finance and science at Purdue that could
put physicists to work on Wall Street has caught the attention of financial
firms. Purdue's computational finance program is the first to include physics
in an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to produce graduates who combine
high-level calculation skills with an understanding of business and finance.
Graduate students in the two-year program are only in their second semester at
the West Lafayette campus, and the program is not yet an official master's
degree, but already their career prospects look bright. ''Although our program
is still in its infancy, we have already been contacted by Wall Street firms
about the availability of our students,'' says Andrew S. Hirsch, head of
Purdue's Department of Physics. ''Wall Street has long courted physicists,
because they possess a particular set of computer modeling and problem-solving
skills that seem to work in the finance industry. It's not that other math
disciplines don't teach the skills, it's just that physicists seem to have the
right combination of them.'' SOURCE: Hirsch (765) 494-3000; e-mail,

Brian Lee wrote:
I recently sold a mutual fund and I was wondering how I report the taxes.
Over previous years, I had paid taxes on the dividends and was wondering
what I do now. I haven't sold a mutual fund before, and it did have some
gains.
You have quite a chore ahead of you!
The average cost basis is the sum of all the purchase dollars divided by
the sum of all the purchase shares - this includes the small amounts from
reinvested dividends and reinvested capital gains.
Even though you paid taxes on dividends and capital gains, these figure
in the cost basis if reinvested.
The ordeal is that you need all your mutual fund statements - and if you
have had the fund for many years, you need all of these.
Once you figure your average cost, you can use that as a starting point
for future average cost calculations. Say you purchased 1,234.333 shares
over several years and the total cost of the purchases was $13,222.36 -
that calculates to $10.71 average cost per share.
Of course, you could get fancy and sell specific shares (first shares you
bought or last shares you bought). But this adds to the complication.

Subject: option strategies - how to lock in current price?
Hi
I will have some options vested next month. And the stock price is good
now.
Is there any way I can lock the current price and deliver
the shares next month?
I vaguely remember two terms - selling short and puts.
can some one explain or give a strategy to lock the current
price.
Thank You

Subject: Beware: MCI's Net Shaving Plan
I signed for MCI's Net Shaving Plan and this is what I discovered.
1) My local toll (Chicago area) calling went from 3 cents a minute to
5cents a minute peak (7am -7pm) and 4 cents a minute offpeak.
2) Calling within Illinois went from 12 cents a minute (24hr) to 25cents
a minute peak and 10 cents a minute off peak.
To make it worse they now have my credit card number for direct billing.
Most of the calls I make are in the local toll area. The MCI internet
sign up page did not give any info on these new rates. I had to pry
them out of an MCI rep.

Chase brokerage unit has lowest cost
The recently announced $5 stock trading commission set by Brown &
Co. brokerage is raising eyebrows on Wall Street and the Net.
Piper Jaffray electronic commerce analyst Bill Burnham said he was
"shocked" at the rate and even more surprised when he learned that
Brown is a subsidiary of Chase Manhattan (CMB). Boston-based Brown
became part of Chase four years ago. A spokesman for Chase
characterized Brown's low commission rate as "very strategic," the
New York Daily News reported. "It will be a growth business worthy
of future investment," added Chase Investment Service's Greg
Rotella. One estimate is that there are now 50 Internet trading
firms.
