My Sailing Photo's

These are some photos of sailing in Utah. I will add to this page as I get good or interesting shots.

This is a nice shot of "Que Pasa" a Pinnacle 29. This is a very fast boat with a pretty lady for a skipper. The GSLYC has several women who race competitively and do well against all those burly men.

Que Pasa

Here is a photo of the commodore's boat, "Kairos".

Kairos

This is a photo of Abaxas. Darin Christesen is the owner and our club web lacky. This photo was taken at the finish of the "Dealers' Cup&pqot;

Abraxas

This is a typical sunset we get at Great Salt Lake. All of the tourist info has something similar.

Sunset

This next photo was taken durring one of out Wednesday night races. The sky and water were so dramatic that I took several pictures and this is one of the better ones. The boats are &puot;Dutch Treat" with the blue hull and Diana Goodel with her boat "Pack-a-Lunch"

Wednesday Pack-a-Lunch and Dutch Treat

This photo was taken on the way back from Lakeside on the 2004 Reynold's Cup. The Reynold's Cup is what we call an "Offshore" and it is to be at least 80 miles in length. This year the wind was 25 to 35 knots except for a half hour calm between the Miller Point buoy and the Lakepoint buoy. Our top peak speed was 14.1 knots and Stephaie's eyes were as big as sausers. What a sled ride it was.

Headed home Reynold's Cup on Que Pasa

This photo is of Diana Goodel holding court at the classroom portion of the 2004 ladies program. The club puts together an instructional series every year as an outreach for women sailers who need to learn more and women who want to learn to sail. After the short lectures, we hit the water for practical hands-on experience with tacking, jibing, sail trim, helmsmanship, man overboard, and spinaker work.

This was the group I had on Wasabi on the first Saturday class.

Saturday women's

This was the group I had on Wasabi on the first Sunday class. I had a lot of fun with both groups and the woman in the yellow shirt in the previous picture is Diana's daughter Cory. She often comes with me to make sure that I allow the women to get a full day's practice because she knows that I am used to single handing and often tend to take over and just do all of the work. This would defeat the purpose of the class so I let her teach, I play assistant and walk around the boat checking the trim and hardware.

Sunday women's

This is a nice photo of Chris Quigley, the GSLYC's current treasurer relaxing on the down-hill slide to the finish of the 2004 Reynold's cup. If you look closely, it looks like the knot meeter is showing 11.9nm.

Relaxing at 11.9

This next photo is a very dramatic shot of the sky from the last one of our Wednesday night races. The wind started out at 6 to 10nm from the North to aout 25 from the West. Later that evening it got much worse.

A awmonous sky

I caught this shot of "Pack A Lunch" at the finish. They forgot to get the course change and sailed passed the gate but it gave me a chance for a great photo.

Reaching with the chute

This is the group of ladies I was able to sail with on possibly the last women's program practical sailing class. If the drought continues and the lake drops much more, I will not be able to get out of the marina. This was a beutiful day with winds from 8 to 12 nm well off the water so the lake was glass smooth. This is what one of the Great Salt Lake "Magic Moments" looks like.

Magic Moment

On this day, Euphoria and Forty Two were locked in a heated battl. Euphoria held on to the lead until just before the finish when Forty Two was the recipient of a favorable wind shif and puff. Forty Two ended up edging out Euphoria by four seconds at the finish. I do not have enough hands to take photos of the &qote;photo finishes&qote;.

Dueling 20's

This is a lovely shot of Euphoria with her kite flying well.

Euphria

This is a lovely shot of Forty Two not far behind.

Forty Two

Our top &qote;C&qote; fleet boat Empty Space sailed by Hank and Co. Empty Space often corrects over all racers when they race the same course with the same start. This time the two Ultimate 20's finished one and two followed closely by Empty space if there were an over-all score.

Empty Space

This is a nice shot of Warren Stockton's Capri 25 &qote;Cuervo Especial&qote;

Cuervo Especial

This is another nice shot of the commodore's boat Kairos.

Kairos

This is a photo of our treasurer's boat Getaway.

Getaway

I liked this shot of Pack a Lunch with the two Ultimate 20's, Cuervo Especial, and Empty Space in the background.

PAL & Friends

This is a photo I scanned from the cover of the "Tooele Transcript Bulletin." The photographer and reporter came with us durring the "Crystal Cup" race on the Wednesday night before the 2004 "Sailfest." The theam for the 2004 "Sailfest" was "South Shore Marina" a play on the musical "South Pacific." I felt I would make a better Maori warrior than a seaman.

Kate and Dad setting the spinnaker

While we were waiting for the finish of the "Utah Cup" held in conjunction with "Sailfest" we had a little raft up and many of us went for a cooling swim. The air temp. was in the upper 90's and the water was about 80.

Refilling the cooler

Dale took this photo from a float cusion along the finish line. There is about a 1/4 knot current that runs from East to West her at "C" mark.

A view of the raft up

This is another photo from a Wednesday night race that started to blow a bit out of the West. The boat with the spinnaker out and healed way over is "Empty Space" with their heavy air chute.

Empty Space and Kairos finishing

This is a beutiful sunset. The U20 in the lead is "Euphoria" and the boat in the middle of the sun is Dave Searer's new boat "Nine and Change." This photo was from the Wednesday night race held on August 11, 2004. The wind was very light and we almost did not make the time limit.

The sun sets on Nine and Change

I will try to update this as I get noteworthy photos.

You may e-mail me if you want copies of any of these photos. I have other versions with a higher resolution.
