This movie was amazing! And colossal! And…man!
Actually, I didn't think this film was as bad as tyranist did (which is a switch).
I've seen a couple of Bert I. Gordon's flicks, and usually I've found there to be a lot of
potential for a cool story that's buried under zero production value and an immensely
talky script. Now, while I didn't find this to be quite on par with, say The Beginning
of the End, there was still some positive among all the negative. It was interesting to
see the primitive special effects and guess how they did it. Since everything was
done either practically or low-budgetly, it's fun to appreciate when an effect does
work, and realize that you could probably do that in a movie yourself (without the aid of
computer-generated anything). The Fifties, a believe I've said, were an all-time low for horror movies.
But there's also a naivite in the films of this period that's sort of sweet. Not that there's an excuse
for "the heart is made up of one big cell," of course. These movies are good for a
laugh too. And for those reasons, at least, I can't completely condemn it.
I wonder what became of the guy who played Bib Fortuna. He was cool.
The tyranist's thoughts
There was some debate as the credits rolled as to whether this was a reviewable film or not.
First, it spends a lot of time pretending to be straight up science fiction in spite of the fact that
they are constantly building to a very horror-like rampage. Second, I kept falling asleep because
the movie was unutterably dull.
So a guy gets exposed to a massive dose of radiation when he runs out to help a crashed pilot
on a nuclear test site. How he lives is anyone's guess. Of course, he is now horribly mutated
and growing at an incredible rate. Oh, and it is driving him insane.
The effects were typically poor, but not terrible for the day. Most of all the movie just shouldn't
have been made. The production was really sub-par as well as the script, the acting and just
about everything else.
Best of all was the explanation of why he was going to die if he got to big. You see, apparently
the heart is a single cell and as he was growing that one cell wasn't growing as fast as the
rest of him. Rish and I literally busted up laughing when the pathetic scientist explained this
to the heroine complete with bad diagrams.
Trust me on this one, you don't want to watch this movie. You just don't.
