The tyranist's thoughts
In the months that led up to Rish and me founding the Horror Film Compendium, one of the movies we caught in the theatre
was An American Werewolf in Paris. Not having the background in horror film that Rish had, I quite enjoyed the movie
and argued all of its virtues with him. Since then I've seen the original and I have to admit that on a few accounts he
was dead on.
So it is years after the werewolf has terrorized London and even though they never state it explicitly, it is hinted that
the coupling of a certain werewolf and nurse has produced a werewolf offspring. Enter American tourists and let the fun
begin.
While this has some really nice locales just like the first movie and the story itself is really pretty interesting, its
greatest downfall are the werewolf effects. They are merely decent where the effects from the first movie were pretty
spectacular. I guess it is hard to follow genius like that, but they could have tried just a little harder.
The other aspect of the film that is different from the first, but that I like, is that there is a tangible bad guy this
time. They finally gave us someone to root against. Not that this was a weakness in the first movie, which it wasn't, but
I can't imagine them ever being able to generate the sympathy that the first one did.
See this one if you are a fan of the first, you just might like it, but know that it has some shortcomings and be grateful
that they never made "An American Werewolf in Prague."
