Rish Outfield's reviews
Another Canadian horror film. I didn't have very high expectations for this
film, though both tyranist and I like Rutger Hauer, I was pleasantly
surprised. And that's nicer than disappointment any day. The story was
actually pretty good (the writers of Alien at work here) and it wasn't the
stuff we normally see. There were very few men in this movie, but not for
the usual slasher reason. Tyranist and eye expected this to go one way and
it went a completely different one...also nice. The female lead (Kristen
Lehman) was very good and very very attractive, and she played a big part in
my liking the film (the extremely long sex scene involving her didn't hurt
things, though). Hauer brought a touch of class to the project, causing me
to reexamine his talents as an actor. The little beasties that were the
monsters were pretty lame and are never shown as clearly as they are on the
video cover. Also, this had an obnoxious and unsatisfying ending that didn't
really belong in this usually-well-done film. Oh, if you've ever seen the
casssette, this is the one with the eye-catching liquid-filled case. It has
little to do with the content of the film, nor should it be taken into
consideration when renting.
Best Scare: One of the beasties disturbs a corpse in an already-tense moment.
I'd Recommend It To: Rutger Hauer fans, Canadians, and people who just want to enjoy a decent horror film.
The tyranist's thoughts
For a movie with this bad of a title and that crappy of a cover, it turned out to be really good. We still aren't talking
about the top of the horror movie heap, but the production values were decent and the script was mostly good. Rutger Hauer
is a big bonus since I've been a fan of his for a long time. Add a script written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett of
Alien fame and something good should come out of it. There were some plot points that seemed
odd and the actors were nearly all female, which also seemed very odd in spite of the scripted excuse. My biggest plot
complaint would be that the extended sex scene occurs while everyone else on the island is preparing for the final battle.
Are people having sex immune to the evils that walk the earth or what? The sex scene did make sense within its subplot, but
the timing just seemed bizarre.
All in all, this movie is much better than I expected and well worth the time spent. You can do much, much worse.
