Rish Outfield's reviews
In this dull and uninspired remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, young, unhappy, rebellious teen Gabrielle Anwar moves onto an army base with her father, stepmother, and half brother. She makes a friend, gets a boyfriend, and argues a lot with her old man. Then the pods come.
In retrospect, the worst thing about Body Snatchers is simply its laziness. It doesn't try to cover new ground, or add any twists to the already-familiar story (so familiar that the movie never explains anything, it simply assumes you know what is going on from previous films), or attempt to make a point about anything. This was a snoozer, taking way too long to move the story along (and not in actual length, but in feel). And the ending just sucked. It was like there was an argument between ending it happily and ending it unhappily, and in the end, both parties shook hands and said, "Let's neither of us have our way." Forest Whitaker's two scenes were simply awful. I can't think of a more appropriate word. The only thing I liked about this film was the snatchers' taking advantage of regular folks' emotions to detect us. It was interesting that they tried to get a rise out of us just to see if we were one of them or not. Still, I had seen this done elsewhere, and better.
You could argue that showing the invasion beginning in the military was a symbol for the inhumanity of the armed forces or the dangers of a strong central government, but you would be wrong, this film says nothing, does nothing, IS nothing.
Best Scare: Probably the alien scream (stolen from 1978's "Invasion"), but in this film, it's more annoying than frightening. There are no real scares, per se, as any subtlety or craft is missing from the film I saw.
Shrug it off. I'll try to do the same.

The tyranist's thoughts
A slightly above average movie that is very under-achieving when compared to the earlier versions. This time they've moved the pods away from the general populace and onto a military base where people act weird already. This of course makes them blend in better. Interestingly the pods behave a little differently this time around. The emotionlessness still appears to be a factor, but they know how to use sex as a weapon. I found these pods a lot less threatening although they did dwell on some interesting points in the earlier movies.
The fact that this was penned by two of my horror world favorites (Stuart and Dennis) makes it even a little more disappointing. I say this even though the movie ended up being an above average horror flick. It just doesn't measure up the the earlier incarnations, not that much could. The fact that I find Gabrielle Anwar creepy in the first place probably didn't help as she played the heroine. Still, I would say that this should be given a shot. It would be fun to marathon all three movies, but this one would probably be best enjoyed by itself when it wouldn't have to compete with cinematic masterpieces.
