The tyranist's thoughts
And you thought the French just made art house movies that bear no resemblance to the ass-kicking cinema available in other regions of the world. Well, perhaps you should check out Le Pacte des Loupes young man.
So there's this beast terrorizing the rural French countryside and the King has sent in his royal taxidermist and naturalist to stop it. Fortunate for everyone, he brings along his Iroquois friend, Mani, who happens to be pretty good at this kind of thing. The courtier falls in love, is shown strange visions, and eventually gets around to hunting the beast.
This was an odd one as horror films go. It is undeniably horror, but it has a much broader sensibility than most filled at times with romance, court intrigue, and good old west style brothels. The beast is pretty well done although the CG sticks out at times. The action is nice and very Hong Kong in its stylings. As eager as I was to see this one, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was even better than I had hoped for.
This is our first French film for the HFC, but I'm going to make the recommendation that I usually make, you must watch it in French. I know some of you can't read that fast and just can't follow the subtitles, but it really must be seen in its original language.
If you are even a little interested in seeing this one do so, and if you aren't, then maybe you should think about it. It is rare that a movie as intriguing as this one comes along in the horror genre.

Rish's Reviews
I don't have much to say that wasn't said above. This was an ecclectic blend of several genres, the first French film on the site, featured an unusual, brilliantly conceived monster, amazingly attractive women, and was a long, but fascinating film. I liked the fight scenes, Mark Dacascos was quite good, and the plot kept me guessing. Also, Monica Bellucci is super hot. The love interest girl was beautiful too. Heck, even the beast's victims looked good. Mmm.
Now, I've never claimed to be as smart as tyranist (okay, there was that one time two years ago, but I was trying to pick up on a girl and nothing else was working), but it's still a little embarrassing to admit that I didn't enjoy this film as much as he did because it was in French. I guess I always feel a bit under-educated when I see a foreign film, because I tend to get lost early on and forget character names, and occasionally fall asleep.
Now, I didn't fall asleep during Brotherhood of the Wolf, not at all, and I was never bored, even though it's two and a half hours long. But I'm sure I would've enjoyed it more had it been in a language I understand. But hey, just because I'm flawed doesn't mean you shouldn't see it. You're cultured and intelligent not petty and weak-minded like me and my ilk.
Did I just say ilk? I meant, "You smart, Rish Outfield not smart. Me go now. Grunt."
