Rish Outfield's reviews
It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and a pretty elementary school teacher with a
tie to the hook-handed killer ghost says his name five times to prove to her
students that he doesn't exist. It turns out that that was a mistake. It is
revealed that her father was killed by the Candyman, and the rest of the
members of her family are next.
This was a scary movie, folks. Maybe not so much as the first one (my shorts
are still wet over that one), but really scary with a lot of evil dreams and
jump-outs to keep me on my toes.
What a great title, especially when they explain what it means.
Kelly Rowan, the female lead was a lovely,
girl-who-marries-your-best-friend-and-you-never-get-over-it type, and that
really worked for the character.
Tony Todd is very cool in his role of the Candyman. He is able to play
characters you like, such as on Star Trek: The Next Generation, or
characters you completely despise, such as in The Rock, and that's a
talent. The Candyman seems similar to Freddy Krueger at times, especially in
his origin (he's dead, he was murdered in the past but he keeps coming back,
he's not a flesh and blood killer but exists in a different dimension from
ours, etc.), but he also has some endearingly tragic qualities to his
character, a sadness to his death and rebirth that Freddy never neared.
Best Scare: This had several fake scares, but strangely, nearly every one of them worked.
The tyranist's thoughts
A decent sequel to a very scary first movie. I suppose it would be difficult to really follow up something like Bernard Rose's
movie. Of course, we watched this movie at the end of a long week of horror movies and perhaps I had just seen so many
bad horror movies that anything would be great. I like the efforts they made to tie this one into the first movie. And I loved
seeing Phillip Purcell (played in both movies by Michael Culkin) get his comeuppance. Still this one lacked some of the
charm and insanity of the first one. Once again, they went a little further and tried to explain the killer's power. It worked
out better here than in some other movies I have seen, but it leaves me wondering how they could possibly make a sequel.
If you liked the first one, chances are that you will like this one. It drops a little, but not enough to drive away anyone
who really cares. Tony Todd plays the Candyman as well as ever and will continue to play him I suppose. Enjoy.
