Rish Outfield's reviews
In the all-American town of Cherry Falls, a black-clothed (and -haired) killer is killing
the local teenagers. The gag here is, the killer only murders virgins! I will make no
reference to Star Trek conventions and go on with my review now. The local sheriff
and his daughter try and get to the bottom of this mystery and find more than they
bargain for.
Boy, that was a lame description.
The killer was dressed as a woman, folks. And here's another thing, how could a killer
KNOW who was a virgin and who wasn't, really? I mean, I have a friend who stayed
a virgin till a week after he got married. You'd never guess THAT. It presented a
couple of big ole stretches of believability, but otherwise, a fairly entertaining little
slasher film. It really shied away from the gore, which is a prerequisite nowadays,
unfortunately. You gotta give somebody credit for naming a movie with this premise
"Cherry Falls" (either credit or a severe beating). Other than that, there's little that
makes this film noteworthy. That's not to say it's terrible, or even poorly made--it
just never creates any scares or moments where you clap your hands in joy. You've
clapped your hands in joy before, right tyranist? Oh wait, there was one hand-clapping
part. It comes in a cool moment where all the kids in town decide to have a big orgy
to take themselves out of the running (hey, good thinking, kids).
The premise was cute, and I didn't find much to dislike about the film. It wasn't
anywhere in the ballpark of scary, but it was technically proficient and the story
wasn't awful. The acting was really pretty good. Michael Biehn, of James Cameron
fame is naturally, effortlessly good as the town sheriff. Brittany Murphy, in Clueless
and other stuff (including "King of the Hill"). I don't particularly like her, but ah well.
Candy Clark from American Graffitti, Jay Mohr as the uber-understanding
teacher, the gimpy-looking fat-woman-lover from Road Trip has a very
small part. Was it just me, or was Murphy finding sexual tension among not only her
boyfriend, but the local safe homosexual, her teacher, and her father?
Line To Remember: "I always knew he was a buttpirate."
I'd Recommend It To: I don't know. If somebody asked me if it was worth a shot,
I might say yes and I might say no. I'm sorry if I disappointed you.
Note: One thing I found interesting was that on the DVD, this is bound with
Terror Tract, a never-heard-of-it-before anthology starring John Ritter.
Terror Tract is actually much better.
The tyranist's thoughts
I remember getting really excited about this one when I first heard it was coming out
in late 2000. For some reason it never made it to my local cineplex and I felt left out.
This is the kind of movie that I generally take to (at least more than Rish does) and
with a premise and tagline like this, how could you go wrong?
So it took me a while to get around to it, but when I did finally manage to sit down
for this one, I was as eager as a sophomore at the prom. I like Brittany Murphy (if
you don't know who she is, find out) and I even kind of like Jay Mohr. Throw in
quiet Michael Biehn and I'm willing to watch. It turned out to be a little formulaic,
but it's slick and caters to the modern sensibility. There were parts that reminded
me strongly of the underground/independent horror of the late '70s/early '80s, but
surprisingly that didn't detract as much as it could have.
The script was smart and the idea that the kids would have an orgy so that they
would no longer be targets is brilliant. Still the execution of that was a little lacking
and there is a hugely disappointing lack of nudity. Even bearing that in mind, the
movie carries itself well and really plays pretty even with its compatriots. Don't
get me wrong, if this had come out before Scream
it wouldn't have started the revolution, but I liked it and you might to.
