The tyranist's thoughts
We've avoided this one for a very long time. In my mind I blame Rish and his well-documented
loathing of Fairuza Balk (Rish--Hey, when have I ever said anything against Fairuza
Balk? She's like a cousin to me!), but really that's just an excuse. Deep down, I
really wanted to like this movie and feared that I would hate it.
Three girls have a sort of mini-coven thing going on and are perfectly happy with it
except that they can't really invoke much in the way of magic without one more person.
A new girl moves in who proves to be a natural witch and she is instantly pulled into
the group. Well, suddenly they have more power than they ever had and bad things
happen.
I have to back Rish up on this one, Fairuza Balk is annoying to a staggering degree and
it is fortunate that she is not the protagonist here. Instead the story focuses primarily
around Robin Tunney's character and I find her much more palatable.
In some ways I regret having put this one off because I enjoyed it a lot. On the other
hand, when you've seen as many horror movies as I have, it is nice to have saved a good
one for later. The story is interesting and the script well done. I found it easy to sympathize
with the characters and their plight and really just had a good time with the movie.
If you like the type of horror that has been coming out since the mid-'90s then you
will probably really like this one, unless, of course, your name is Rish (Rish--Hey!). Fairuza is Fairuza
after all.
Rish Outfield's reviews
Okay, so I don't like Fairuza Balk. Can you blame me?
