Rish's Reviews
We've got a horror anthology, like the other two, but with a bunch of vignettes rather than stories. They're sort of connected in a "Look what shenanigans go on in this neighborhood" kind of way, but still not enough to pass in a court of law.
Here's the thing: this is a terrible movie. It's badly done, but even worse than that, it's badly done.
Tyranist has made it no secret that he's no fan of anthology films like these, with segments/stories/sketches, but I rather like them, feeling that a lot of tales are great in small portions, but not enough for a full feature film. But wow, there wasn't enough for a half hour segment of "Tales from the Darkside," or even worse, its weaker followup "Monsters."
Creepshow 2 wasn't great, but it looks like Creepshow 1 compared to Creepshow 3. As the movie progressed, I eagerly anticipated the ending to arrive, so that it would be over, of course, but also so I could add it to my Worst Films Reviewed For the Site list. It was that bad.
But then they had a segment about a really bad doctor. It was still quite weak, but there were a couple of moments that were pretty funny. I don't know if the actor they got to play the doctor was just much better than the material, and he ad-libbed some stuff that they somehow didn't cut out, inadvertently lifting the film from a one out of ten to a two or three. But since the humour was absent from the other segments, I don't know if I can place the credit on the shoulders of the directors and writers.*
But don't get me wrong, just because we got a chuckle out of five minutes in an eighty minute movie is no reason you should see it. The average viewer, average horror viewer, and average horror anthology viewer should avoid this. If it weren't called Creepshow 3 we wouldn't even have seen it.
And we would've been better off. I spoke to George Romero the other day, and was relieved to find out he hadn't seen Creepshow 3. Even with all his financial problems, he's a man to be envied.
Best Scare: None.
I'd Recommend It To: Also none.
*You know what, forget what I said. This IS one of the worst movies we've reviewed for the site. For its one minute of amusement, you'd still get more laughs from the opening teaser of any episode of "Friends." And for as many scares and laughs as are in this whole movie, you'd get more in any teaser of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
