Rish Outfield's reviews
Made in New Zealand, and while not as graphic as an Italian horror film, this had some way-too-over-the-top-for-America violence in it. Yes kids, there were moments when it got disgusting to the point I had to look away in disbelieving revulsion. And this is me we're talking about.
It was the story of a deranged doctor who has an island retreat where he creates mutated human experiments. When Michael, a young man hypnotized by the doctor into killing his family, is released from prison, he and three of his friends go to the island, presumably for a vacation. And Michael, by the way, wants to kill the doctor while they're there--something his buddies are cool about. Unfortunately, all does not go according to plan.
There was some pretty country in the background, all green and spacious. Those New Zealand accents were quite nice, and the girls were kind of pretty too. The film was a little slow, with lots of shots of people driving and walking. There were some cool ideas here for a cheapo movie and for the most part, I enjoyed watching it. Unfortunately the ending made no sense, and I got the impression that everyone realized the movie had gone on too long, and just decided to quit.
As I mentioned, it featured some repugnant surgery, blood bags, and exploding head effects that went well beyond what's allowed in U.S. films.
Best Scare: One of the characters had a sick, pulsating forehead, and my hands went into fists waiting for it to pop. It did.
I'd Recommend It To: Fans of cheap, strange, Southern Hemisphere Sci-Fi/Horror.

The tyranist's thoughts
As much as I normally bag on movies of Canadian origin, I normally talk up the horror that is produced in Australia and New Zealand. It's too bad that there are always exceptions and that this had to be one.
While the primary threat was obviously a mad scientist, this could also be classified as a movie of the undead. At least, that was what the hero spent most of his time running from. The story was a bit disjointed and the copy I watched was too dark for my poor eyes. The idea wasn't all bad, just recycled and the script seemed to hold water for the most part. I'd have to say I've seen worse films, but this certainly isn't one that I'm going to see again and again. Maybe it was just the profusion of needles in the movie that got me.
