The tyranist's thoughts
I didn't watch Rose Red when it was on TV last year, and I haven't rented the DVD yet. Perhaps I'm just not as big a fan of King as Rish is. He certainly would tell you I'm not. But when he e-mailed me today telling me that The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer would be on tonight and he wasn't going to watch it, I decided to pinch hit for him. I feel kind of weird watching a sequel to a mini-series that I didn't watch, but oh well.
So this time out we are going to be treated to the original story of how Rose Red was first built and the crazy lady who wasn't so crazy at first. Naturally there is death and mystery involved.
I'm not sure that not seeing Rose Red hurt me at all. This is a slick little production that falls into the made-for-TV-movie category rather than mini-series. Good thing too, as I'm not sure they could have stretched it another minute. The production values are nice and it was fun to see a period piece set in 1910, which is much closer to us than most. The acting was good, the plot was solid. I wouldn't say it was inspiring stuff, but the movie was pretty well done. I usually try to act all snooty when talking about made-for-TV stuff, but I have to say that this was better than average. Perhaps not good. Not buy the DVD good, but it is worth a rent, especially if you liked its predecessor.
