Rish Outfield's reviews
Well, it started out pretty great. It was clever, with funny dialogue
(especially from the fat guy-'cause let's face it, everybody loves a good fat
guy) and potential for a good time. I thought, "Boy, these dolls are gonna
be pretty scary." But they weren't. The first murder was somewhat
hilarious, actually. But it was all downhill from there. In fact, the last
'everything is alright, tee hee hee,' five minutes were almost unbearable.
Though clowns frighten tyranist, I am much more disturbed by dolls,
especially those with human-like, yet unpleasant expressions on their ugly
little faces. Dolls are little replicas of people, and many times, a great
deal of effort is expended to make them resemble people. I think that has a
lot to do with my fear. (still, for the best of both worlds, re-watch
Poltergeist, as it has a Clown-Doll in it!) In Dolls, though the effects
are much better than those in the "Puppet Master" series, the 'monsters' are
just as innocuous.
Best Scare: There were no real scares, except one scene where we know
something is behind our heroes, but we can't quite make out what it is.
The tyranist's thoughts
I will start by pointing out that Dolls precedes Child's Play by two years. That
doesn't make it a better movie than Child's Play, it just means that the idea has been
around. In truth it is pretty bad. I am normally a pretty big Stuart Gordon fan. With movies like
Re-Animator and Space Truckers to his credit, there have been quite a few moments of joy in viewing his films.
This is a notable exception. The idea is fundamentally bad and they never really do much to improve it. Imagine
Puppet Master done as a kid-centric film and you get the idea. Probably the best thing about this movie is how
animated some of the dolls are. When some of them smile, it sends chills down your spine. So unless you have a doll fetish, I
would suggest that you pretty much steer clear of this one.
