Rish Outfield's reviews
I saw part of this on the Sci Fi Channel a few years back (they used to show it–and everything–a dozen times a month) and was
intrigued. I mentioned to my roommate that the girl in the show looked like "a much better-looking Drew Barrymore."
The plot was basically this: A girl/woman moves into the apartment of an aspiring L.A. screenwriter, but there's more to her
than meets the eye. They get romantically involved, but her past begins to interfere and she's apparently being stalked by
an evil version of herself.
This had a good concept. I liked the actor who played the young screenwriter, and I really like Drew Barrymore. And I liked
the first half. There was an almost-scary ambience, difficult to describe (and even difficulter to put my finger on why it
was only almost scary). We were told this about the evil twin: "It will do anything to avoid love." You know, I couldn't
tell if the script was smartly-written or just slick. You can be the judge on that. The screenwriter's bitchy best friend
got all the ‘hip & clever' dialogue, but it didn't work. I just hated her. It took me a while to figure out what was going
on, and I don't think that was ever satisfactorily cleared up. There was a nice gothic score (that I must admit went
unnoticed until near the end) and it featured makeup effects by KNB, but nothing to rewind and watch again (but there were a
couple other scenes I'd suggest that on). There was an FBI guy with the weirdest accent since Chris Lambert in Highlander.
Something about the film felt very cheap and amateurish. Notwithstanding, it was a pretty entertaining film, until the lame
last few minutes ruined it for me. The Scooby Doo-culled explanation in the end (where several characters were revealed to
be masks) was more than a little lame and unbelievable. I think something a little better might have been dreamt up, for
just a couple more Scooby Snacks.
Best Scare: There were a couple of creepy moments, but none I can specifically think of.
Note: Okay, in 1992, was Drew Barrymore a former celebrity? Actually, I think not, just ‘cause she's never really faded from
the public eye (at least not for more'n a couple of years). This film was made at the end of Barrymore's career slump, when
she made few films and even fewer good films. Very remarkable (to me, anyway) is the fact that she's naked in the film
(especially in a shower scene where numberless actresses have appeared sans nudity). Now, I ain't complaining (like I said,
she looked better in Doppleganger than in anything else I've seen her in), but it just seems strange to me.
Total Skulls: 19
