Rish Outfield's reviews
In my recent review of Madman, I remarked on the fact that most horror
movie killers are silent and remarked that it might be scary if one laughed
while he stalked his prey. Then I thought of Dr. Giggles, a movie I had
seen at countless video stores but avoided because of the lame title, and
because it starred Larry Drake, an actor I find less frightening than Ralph
Macchio. But hey, hero that I am, I decided to see Dr. Giggles, just so,
if it was as bad as it looked, you would never have to see it. That's why
God made fathers, babe. That's why God made fathers.
The story goes something like this (and do you really need to know?): A girl
with a heart condition (Holly Marie Combs, who some remember from Picket
Fences, but you know as the 'other' girl on Charmed) finds herself stalked
(along with everyone else in town) by the psychotic son of a murderous doctor
who escapes from a mental institution and kills his victim with surgical
implements, doctor-related quips and high-pitched chuckles.
The odd thing about this movie was how watchable it was. The characters are
well-rounded, the dialogue is pretty good (except for some of Larry Drake's
jokes), the gore looks good, and the (admittedly dumb) story moves along
nicely. Manny Coto, who directed Playroom and the terrifying Star Kid,
actually produced a slick-looking, entertaining film here.
I'd Recommend It To: I hate to say it, but I had a good time, in spite of
myself, and you might too.
The tyranist's thoughts
Rish and I avoided this one for a long time simply because it looks so bad. When we finally picked it up, though, I was pleasantly surprised that in spite of some
of its inherent terribleness, the movie was pretty fun to watch. Face it, Larry Drake is never, ever, ever going to be scary.
The strong points in this one lay in the variety of tools of death along with some decent acting. There were moments that were horrible and most of them were
related to dialogue, but really this one pulls itself above what you'd expect. I thought that the script and the basic story idea lacked something, but both ended up
being negligible distractions. Little Holly Marie Combs did a fine job and even if he isn't scary in the least, Larry Drake gave it a good try.
Don't be afraid of the doctor. This is either a far better movie than it looks or I've seen way to many bad ones to tell the difference anymore.
