Rish's Reviews
Evil Breed. I really dig the title, folks. Something about the repetition of the "ee" sound amuses me.
So, a group of students arrive in the forested wilderness (oh, this is supposed to be Ireland?), there to study Druid legends and the history of the land. Unfortunately for them, a band of cannibalistic, inbred mutants set their sights on them, and guess what . . . the kids are picked off, one at a time.
Why did I rent this one? Maybe it looked good. Maybe it was the promise of nudity in the first thirty seconds, I don't know. I'll admit, for a couple of minutes there, I was thinking this was a pretty good movie. And yeah, I figured the nudity couldn't hurt. So there.
Well, this flick was never dull. It featured a couple of surprisingly-attractive girls. And yes, there were porn stars (Jenna Jameson, Ginger Lynn, Taylor Hayes, and Chasey Lain, as advertised on the cover). The real actresses were hotter, though. One character is constantly mean to our virginal heroine, so much so that I found myself starting to like him.
Don't you love the way people sit up after nightmares in movies?
There was some really funny dialogue, but I'm not sure it's meant to be. Obnoxiously, this film quotes Scream more than tyranist and I did in 1997. Can you do that, so blatantly? There was an ample dose of other flicks, like Halloween, The Evil Dead, and Texas Chainsaw, just to keep it relevant. There was a Scream-like score too.
Honestly, though, without the Scream ripoffs and the obnoxious self-reflexive horror film stuff, I think it would've been a fairly good movie. But even that is being generous, I realise.
It featured a really interesting locale, though I don't believe it was Ireland for a second. Northern California, perhaps?* What, nobody in Ireland that is Irish (well, there were a couple of truly horrid fake accents)? The house and its furnishings are clearly North American. And they're driving an American vehicle too (wouldn't the steering wheel be on the other side?). Hmmm.
The ending makes less sense than . . . well, the popularity of reality shows. I wasn't going to give it a What the Hell? but the ending sort of forced my hand.
Was it meant to be funny? A guy actually has his insides pulled out of his ass and then is strangled by them. Not something you see every day.
In fact, if you see the extended, ultra gory edits on the DVD, you can see that there might be some talent here, at least effects-wise. Too bad they're cut out. Apparently, this was a heavily edited version, but I can't review what I haven't seen.
Best Scare: Scare THIS.
Line To Remember: "You guys are really starting to give me the creeps. You sound like some Ted Raimi flick or something."
*It was shot in Canada, actually.
