The tyranist's thoughts
This little Swedish horror flick was a delightful surprise considering the fact that most things made or distributed by A-Pix aren't worth the effort. Instead of the usual crapfest, Evil Ed is a funny crapfest. I mean, face it, the movie really isn't that good, but at least it is completley enjoyable to watch. I had fun and laughed at a lot of the quirky little things they did. I even played a couple of games that I'll mention in a minute.
So this film editor named Edward is moved to the "splatter & gore" department of European Distributing where he is to hastily edit the entire Loose Limbs series so that it can be shown in certain European countries. Well, he is nice conservative boy, but soon the sex and violence gets to him. Now he's a psychopath and is going to purge the world of evil.
The movie works much better than the idea sounds. In a lot of ways they are taking pot shots at horror conventions while paying homage to the genre. It makes for a lot of twisted situations that end up being pretty funny. The acting is okay and it should be noted that a few of the actors were blatantly dubbed for the English release. The dialogue lacks a little since it features about one one-liner a minute for the entire show. Some of them work, some don't. My biggest problem with the movie was the out-of-nowhere voice over at the end. Apparently, we weren't supposed to be satisfied with the action and needed a lengthy explanation of what was to come. It just didn't work.
If you are watching this with friends there are a couple games that would be fun to play. Game the easiest is to try to pick out horror movie posters in the background. There are a lot and some of them pop up in multiple places. Game slightly harder is to note all of the horror movie references. There are also a lot of these with most of them coming from one single movie. I won't give away the answers just in case you really want to play, but it gave me great pleasure to be able to notice how often they borrowed/paid homage to the genre they were working in.
Honestly, this is a bad movie, but you'll have more fun watching it than you should. Check it out as soon as possible.
